An OPG (orthopantomogram) is a panoramic scanning dental X-ray of the upper and lower jaw. It shows a flattened two-dimensional view of a half-circle from ear to ear. Panoramic X-rays allow images of multiple angles to be taken to make up the composite panoramic image, where the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) are in the viewed area.
OPGs are used to view the entire mouth and jaw in a panoramic style. Because of this, OPGs are not only great options for everyday dental check-ups, but they can also be very useful for certain types of treatments too. As panoramic X-rays show the entire mouth of the patient, they would not show intricacies needed to show a cavity, for example. Instead, they are good at showing infections, impacted teeth, wisdom teeth, the jaw joint (TMJ), bone levels, root shape and position and developing teeth.
The OPG machine will effectively rotate around the patient’s head extra-orally, which will be positioned correctly by the radiographer to achieve this effect. No other equipment would be necessary. It is normally quick and takes around 20 seconds in total.
In general, dental X-rays are generally considered safe to use. It is believed that people are exposed to more radiation from their day-to-day life than a single x-ray session. For example an OPG X-ray is the equivalent of 4 days of normal background radiation. You will be warned by your dentist that a panoramic will produce 0.02 mSv, which is more than the 0.005 mSv produced by a standard small X-ray. Aside from this, panoramic x-rays are still considered to be safe to use but speak with your dentist personally if you have a high level of anxiety about being having your X-ray taken.
Here at Wanstead Dental one of the most important benefits of our TRIOS® intra-oral scanner is improving the patient experience.
We have all been to the dentist and at one time or another needed an impression. It’s not fun. The ability to offer digital impressions instead has become a massive advantage to our clinicians and patients.
A patient with a strong gag reflex offers a serious and very real problem particularly when advanced restorative work is contemplated. Fear of gagging during impression taking is a common phobia and has lead to avoidance of the procedure and often non-attendance .Having a digital scan is as comfortable as having a dental exam as a small camera is moved around the tooth. This can be done in stages or all in one go. It normally takes a few minutes from start to finish. You will be, needless to say, overwhelmed by the results and ease of the procedure.
There are many reasons for taking a digital scan. These include:
As part of a dental exam and a communicative tool to show patients their teeth in more detail;
Invisalign® / teeth straightening cases;
Whitening cases;
Cosmetic case planning;
As a record of the teeth (this is saved on the cloud so is available for many years in the future);
Construction of crowns, bridges, veneers, sports guards and mouth guards.
Here at Wanstead Dental we use digital photos to communicate to both patients and colleagues things that may not be easily described. We use state-of-the-art intra-oral cameras and DSLR cameras to showcase images of patients teeth. These will be kept in your clinical records and will be used to help explain things more clearly. It is normally a pen like device so no different to the dental mirror when we are using it.
