A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth.
Crowns can be used to restore the appearance of a tooth, or to strengthen a broken or heavily filled tooth. It is nearly always advisable after a tooth has had a root canal treatment to have a crown fitted to prevent a tooth from fracturing.
At Wanstead Dental we would use our 3D intraoral camera to take images and send these to the dental lab to make your crown. This would normally be over two appointments but more maybe needed. There are several different types of crowns; during the examination the dentist will advise you of the types and their benefits.
The shape of the crown may be slightly different from your normal tooth, you may be aware of it initially. Within a few days it should feel fine, and you will no longer notice it. The crown may need to be adjusted if your teeth do not feel comfortable when you bite together and you should speak to your dentist if that is the case.
The crown itself cannot decay, but decay can start where the edge of the crown joins to the natural tooth. It is very important to keep this area clean to prevent this decay. Our hygienist will be able to advise you on what would be best for your mouth.
Crowns are made of inert materials that do not deteriorate over time. However, the underlying tooth is still prone to decay and gum disease.
How long your crown lasts will depend upon how well you look after your teeth and gums. Good oral hygiene is essential and specific interdental aids would be needed. Properly cared for crowns should last for many years.
